Instrument Rating – Helicopter
An instrument rating (IR) allows the holder to fly helicopters under IFR with a minimum decision height of 200 ft (60m). In case of multi-engine helicopters, these privileges may be extended to decision heights lower than 200 ft (60m).
Experience requirements for the issue of an IR(H)
Applicants shall hold:
- a PPL(H) with a night rating; or
- a PPL(H) and an ATPL(A); or
- a CPL(H); or
- an ATPL(H); and
shall have completed at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as PIC in aeroplanes, helicopters or airships, of which at least 10 hours shall be in helicopters.
Training course für the issue of an IR(H)
Applicants for an IR(H) shall have completed at an approved training organisation one of the following training courses:
- ATPL(H)/IR integrated course
- CPL(H)/IR integrated course
- IR(H) modular course
Theoretical knowledge covers the following subjects:
- 010 Air Law and ATC Procedures
- 022 Aircraft General Knowledge: Instrumentation
- 033 Flight Planning and Monitoring
- 040 Human Performance
- 050 Meteorology
- 062 Radio Navigation
- 092 IFR Communications
Credits available to IR(H) applicants
An applicant for an IR(H) having passed the theoretical exams for a CPL(H) is credited the following subjects:
- Human Performance
- Meteorology
An applicant for an IR(H) having passed the theoretical exams for an ATPL(H) VFR is credited the following subjects:
- Aircraft General Knowledge: Instrumentation
- Human Performance
- Meteorology
The holder of an IR(A) or an applicant having passed the theoretical exams for an IR(A) shall be fully credited towards the requirements for the theoretical knowledge instruction and examination for the IR(H).
